In our village in Rakhine state, we have electricity for 3 hours a day. When I first visited, the power was on from 6 pm - 9 pm. It is now active from 7 pm to 10 pm.
A version of this post was published on the Center for Education Innovations blog today.
For 3 years New Education Highway handed out laptops containing a vast wealth of information as though they were pieces of candy to be chewed over and spat away. The volunteer teachers for the most part do not want to teach. They often follow the government textbook, stand dead centre, and brandish a stick. There is no engagement; from them or their students.
He cares. Suffice to say he really cares. After apologizing to Van that the lesson had not been planned well and so Teacher Chloe cancelled it, we tried again.
Today we printed out 2 lesson plans. Neither of which we taught. I am distraught; my trainee’s eyes glisten with unshed tears. Unspoken words are left hanging in the thick air. We sit and walk in silence. It is not the companionable kind.
I knew full-well that during my brief trip out of the village, I was leaving my trainee vulnerable to changes.
The head monk wants more lessons. He wants conversation held with all of the students. I see why. He has a foreigner in the village and during one conversation with my trainee the monk mentioned equality and fairness.
I do not hold out much hope. I try to be positive, really. However, I have only previous met a couple of groups of students who were so blithely disinterested in learning.
