I have only been observed two times after my initial teacher training. While my stomach rejoices and says 'thank you very much, we do not need to be observed ever!’ my head says that this is too few times and that constructive feedback is essential to grow and that actually watching others teach is one of the most beneficial things you can do as a teacher.
Something that NEH has an eternal struggle with is feedback from and with teachers. This is crucial to the learning process, and absolutely essential when one party is out of the country.
I had already had the pleasure, or worry, of watching this class. This time however, we were rolling out the NEH curriculum.
After the grade 8 class was followed by a shaky beginning using the NEH curriculum from the starting blocks during the volunteer teacher’s class; we decided that the best way to train our motivated and talented, but as yet unpolished, teacher was for me to model a lesson and for him to copy that lesson.
One gaping hole which was left from my last visit to the R.E.C village was to observe one of our teacher trainees teaching his grade 8 English class and this was an oversight that I was keen to rectify.
Observing other teacher’s lessons has been a neglected area of my teaching career. Sure, I observed a few lessons during my teacher training and then later, when I was in charge of teacher training I graded each attempt at a 45 minute lesson.
I’ve been quite surprised at how similar some of the thoughts are in rural Myanmar to those held by many people at home in my village in England.
On my second day at R.E.C, my two students and I had a productive 3 hour meeting in which we discussed the merits of having bi-weekly meetings with the full complement of teaching staff.
